Even as the controversy rages over 'Jalli Kattu' in Tamil Nadu, people
had a field day today in Chandragiri mandal at a little-known village
called A Rangampeta, 15 km from here, celebrating Pasuvula Panduga.
The age-old traditional festival, celebrated on a grand scale this time,
attracted spectators from 60 villages in Chittoor district. Making the
event a matter of prestige and pride, Rangampeta locals had made elaborate
arrangements for the fete, considered a platform to showcase both their
wealth and valour.
'Riiuals' commenced early in the morning. Cattle, with blazing horns,
decorated to the hilt with baubles referred to in local slang as Palakulu,
were shepherded to the village outskirts to perform Poll wherein
a goat is sacrificed and its blood sprinkled around the village.
The real party though began around 2 p.m. The cattle decked in all hues
were let loose in the main street amid drum beats at Diguva Palle in Rangampeta
first and Gollapalle later.
In all, 10 teams, each owning 12 to 42 cattle, took to the field. Teams
from about 12 villages competed with one another to win the honours.
Before the riot run, an elegant ox strutted across the street for the
audience to appreciate its beauty. Some rams too gave it company.
There were reports of a few minor injuries to the participants and even
a scuffle between teams of three participating villages over who won the
prize. The dispute was settled by elders of Rangampeta village.
Preparation for the fest begins at least a week before as the participants
select and make the cattle fighting fit so to speak. Pasuvula Panduga
has been a tradition in the village for centuries as the main occupation
of the villagers is cattle rearing.
